What is an ERRCS / BDA system?

An Emergency Responder Radio Communication System is a separate, code-mandated in-building radio network on the 700/800 MHz public safety bands. It guarantees firefighters and police keep radio contact in stairwells, basements, elevators and cores. It is a life-safety system — not the same thing as a cellular booster, and it cannot be shared with one.

Is my building required to have one?

If your jurisdiction has adopted IFC 510 or NFPA 1225 (formerly NFPA 72 Chapter 24), your building must demonstrate a minimum radio signal level in a set percentage of critical and general areas — commonly 99% and 90%. New construction is tested at occupancy; existing buildings are pulled in during renovations, additions or routine fire inspections. The AHJ, not the carrier, makes the call.

What does it cost?

Typical commercial ERRCS deployments run $1.00–$4.00 per sq ft depending on how much of the building fails the initial grid test, whether a NEMA-rated enclosure and 12/24-hour battery backup are required, and how much of the run is in a fire-rated pathway. Annual recertification is a separate, much smaller line item.

What this covers

How the scope actually runs.

We coordinate directly with the fire marshal and radio system administrator to confirm the frequency plan, required signal thresholds, and grid test methodology before design begins. Systems are built with NEMA 4 enclosures, 12 or 24-hour battery backup, annunciator panels at the FACP, and supervised monitoring circuits.

Commissioning includes a full grid test across every division of the building, documented pass/fail per grid square, and attendance at the AHJ inspection. Every ERRCS we have commissioned has passed AHJ inspection.

Because code requires annual recertification, we carry a maintenance program that re-tests the grid, verifies battery capacity and files the documentation each year.

Asked about this service

Can one system cover both cellular and public safety?+

No. Public safety operates on separate licensed bands with different code requirements. We deploy them as two systems under one contract, often sharing riser pathways and install crews.

What happens if we fail the grid test?+

Failure blocks occupancy. We benchmark the building against the AHJ's threshold during the survey so the design targets a pass on the first inspection.
